Dressing Diamond Wheels and CBN Wheels
On occasion the diamond and cbn wheel surface has to be conditioned. The conditioning of Diamond and CBN can be divided up into the process of dressing, profiling and sharpening. Dressing a wheel is typically done when the bond type is that of vitrified, resin and hybrid. Dressing grinding wheels opens up the pours of the wheels by removing some of the bond and exposing the abrasive. By maintaining good dressing practice, the superabrasive wheel will maintain a consistently good grinding performance at low spindle loads.
Profiling/truing
The profiling process eliminates geometric deformities and gives the grinding wheel the required shape. When profiling CBN grinding wheels, a diamond profiling can is used. The diamonds cut CBN grit and the bond to create a smooth shaped wheel. Profiling diamond grinding wheels is economically efficient as the wheel can continually be used until there is no abrasive left on the wheel. Resin bond and Hybrid Diamond Grinding tools are usually dressed with silicon carbide or Aluminum oxide wheels, a brake truing device or a diamond roll dresser.
Sharpening/Opening
Diamond wheels and CBN wheels are typically sharpened when the superabrasive layer becomes blunt. Sharpening the exposed grit, results in the removal of loaded material of foreign materials and particles and cuts back the bonding layer. Sharpening is necessary when the bonding has not been sufficiently cut back to achieve the correct grain exposure
